COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Earthquake Relief Efforts:
Like the rest of the world, we at Brown & Tarantino have been shocked and saddened by the horrific tragedy that is unfolding in Haiti. The images of the suffering and loss in the wake of the earthquake have been heart-breaking. That it has happened in a country that has already faced years of hardship makes this latest crisis particularly devastating and the needs of the Haitian people even more dire.
On a personal level, the managing partner of our White Plains office, Max Gaujean, is a Haitian-American. Max was born in Haiti and his parents, who were both physicians, trained in Haiti before coming to the U.S. His father became a doctor, in large part, because of Dr. William Larimer (Larry) Mellon, who founded Hôpital Albert Schweitzer (HAS), located in central Haiti, over fifty years ago. Max's wife, who is also a physician, worked at HAS as part of her medical training while at Yale.
During this crisis, the doctors and nurses on staff at HAS have been working day and night to treat walk-ins from Port-au-Prince, as well as the local residents.
We want to help. We plan to donate to HAS (http://www.hashaiti.org/) and to Partners in Health (http://pih.org/home.html) and invite our friends and clients to do the same. PIH is a non-profit corporation with several well-established sites in Haiti, and whose main goals are to bring the benefits of modern medical science to those most in need of them and to serve as an antidote to despair. As patients flood to PIH sites from Port-au-Prince, they are finding themselves in need of both medical personnel and supplies.
